| Look | What can you say about a makeup flagship with
a location in Trump Tower, right in the Fifth Avenue facade? Power. Avon has
sold super products at remarkably low prices for years. They're just huge, and an
American icon. Here is an exquisite store, with custom teak cabinetry, beautiful
mosaic tile flooring, in white, cream and sage green, and a sage green carpet running up a
flight of stairs to a second floor where Avon sells their aromatherapy and spa products
(that are not necessarily in the Avon catalog). And they sell nail polish for $3.75! There's a spa on the 5th and 6th floors of Trump Tower, and a private elevator. |
| Vibe | As beautiful as it is, the sales people do not make you feel comfortable. The sales person in the second floor aromatherapy department was helpful, friendly, and described the inventory. The sales rep downstairs, which, of course, is where you enter, asks if she can help you before you're in the door. She follows you around while you're browsing, which makes you feel like you're being rushed out. The stock is great, but Avon needs to work on customer service. |
| The Goods | Avon's full skin care line: foundation, blush
(check out Egyptian Sun for $7.00!), eye pencils, eye shadows (check out Spring Spirit for
$3.00!), eye creams (check out Blue Haze), lipsticks, mascaras, and nail polishes (check
out Jet, a deep chocolate brown, Intrigue, a gunmetal gray, Oxford Wine, a deep magenta,
and Spring Fling, a bright fuschia). Upstairs, the aromatherapy/spa products, include: bath salts, bath oils, tea scents, scented candles, fragrances, and for a truly wowser bath, Avon sells a handbag size tea bag for your bathtub! There's also a hair care product line exclusive to the store. They smell great. The spa on the 5th and 6th floor offers a small book of services: massage, reflexology, facials, makeup instruction, hair styling, eyebrow shaping, waxing, manicure and pedicure, body wraps and body treatments. They also offer packages. How about a pre-wedding day consultation, and a wedding day total beautification? The literature is designed in a truly sophisticated manner, entirely feminine in feeling. Avon offers conference center facilities in the spa. They can seat 75 people in each of two rooms, catering kitchens, audio/video. There is a monthly newsletter, providing you with special events offered at the store and spa. |
